Review of the Article “How the West was Lost” Essay

In the article review â€Å" How the West was Lost† the author, William T. Hagan explains that in a brief thirty-eight year period between 1848 and 1886, the Indians of the Western United States lost their fight with the United States to keep their lands. While nothing in the article tells us who Hagan is, or when the article was written, his central theme of the article is to inform us of how the Indians lost their lands to the white settlers. I found three main ideas in the article that I feel that Hagan was trying to get across to us. Hagan put these events geographically and chronologically in order first by Plains Indians, then by the Western Indians. The first point he made was how the Westward expansion affected the Plains Indians.†¦show more content†¦To make matters worse, most Indians did not know what treaties were or that they even existed. The treaties began in the 1850’s and the government started moving the Indians onto reservations. As tribes mo ved onto reservations, the government forced them to give up their ponies and their weapons. The whites tried to enforce the treaty, which was a document that was never explained to them. The treaties intended to make the Indians adopt the white man’s customs. The government wanted the Indians to become farmers, and send their children to school. The Navajo Indians who were included in the Western tribes were about the only Indians that were adept at farming. The Navajo Indians still subsidized their farming by raiding Mexican villages, which the white Americans frowned upon. Farming was not a profitable way of life for the Indians. Food and provisions were supplied by the government and intended to support the Indians farming on the reservations. These materials and equipment did not always get to the Indians. Many so-called Indian agents took the provisions that the government was supplying to the Indians for themselves or sold them to make money. Indians on the reservation s were more susceptible to sickness and disease. More than two thousand Navajo Indians died of smallpox on their reservation.
